I heard an interview with her on the ABC's Book Show (24/9/07, you can podcast it) where Nicky described her decision to illustrate the characters as creatures because Fitzgerald's original descriptions are so over-the-top they're more like archetypes than realistic descriptions (she says it more eloquently than that) ... for this reason, those pages at the party fascinated me - Nicky has obviously spent so much time (and had so much fun) visualising these bizarre characters. I think this is an example of the illustrations adding something entirely new to the interpretation of the text. It reminds me a little of some illustrated editions of Alice in Wonderland where the characters resemble politicians and public figures - it contextualises a known story in a new way.Zoƫ Sadokierskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06249152683453963642noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1752841194995687278.post-45473539414935234082007-08-21T16:10:00.000-05:002007-08-21T16:10:00.000-05:00I just reread GATSBY this week. What a strange project to adapt it with drawings of weird little critters.

My least favorite part of the novel is the boring litany of people Carraway describes at one of Gatsby's parties--which the artist has chosen to illustrate.James Robert Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17281049641681225389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1752841194995687278.post-37486783391350897942007-08-21T06:39:00.000-05:002007-08-21T06:39:00.000-05:00My pal Arthur says he was at a party in Edinburgh ...My pal Arthur says he was at a party in Edinburgh last night. Many of the same qualities the lady possesses herself.

I look forward to Gatsby with a glee not seen in these parts for many a footy season.mrjslackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18048047834830153356noreply@blogger.com
