Another thought about Lew Sayre Schwartz. He worked for Bob Kane for seven years and subsequently was partner in the animation/design firm of Ferro, Mogubgub and Schwartz. He's the only person in that sentence without a Wikipedia entry. Lew was a very self-effacing guy and a couple of those other names certainly weren't. Anyway, there's a job for somebody.
Duncan Jones recently observed that it's not the victors who write history after all, but the Wikipedia updaters.
¡Hola, Eddie!
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo, amigo.
Hey there! Welcome back to the blogosphere Mr Campbell.
ReplyDeleteAlison.
Missed your blog, but from a selfish perspective, if you have been spending your time drawing COMICS, it is probably a better deal...
ReplyDeleteHi Eddie, go look at what Warren Ellis' found today:

I haven't touched Wikipedia in a long time, but you guilted me into it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lew_Schwartz
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Steve
Addendum to last comment:
ReplyDeleteYou've probably read the stuff in The Saint: A Complete History in Print, Radio, Film and Television of Leslie Charteris' Robin Hood of Modern Crime, Simon Templar 1928-1992 but I did love that Schwartz was reported to have said he would draw hands anyway he god-damn pleased unless Charteris wanted to draw them himself, at which time Schwartz would take a course in journalism in self-defense.
Steve Block, you are a fine fellow!
ReplyDeleteThe entry read nicely. we can fine-tune any details later. well done. I've let Lew's family know you've taken care of that.
and no, I haven't read that about Lew in The Saint book. I'll have to find that now.
thanks for pointing at it!
Eddie
I've expanded it as best I can from what I can find online and of course your very fine Egomania #1 which I had to get down from the loft and made me realise the roof is still leaking. Sayre comes off badly in the Saint book, which is arguably going to be biased towards Chanteris, but gets to give some of his own side of the story in the Alter Ego interview, and between the two you get the general idea the two didn't get on and a parting of the ways suited everyone.
ReplyDeleteOn the Wikipedia entry, I've seen various dates mentioned online for the sad event, so if I have put the wrong one in, please excuse the inexcusable.
Steve, in the last few days I've discovered a couple of things, that Lew's son Jed is in the design, animation and digital effects business. There's a show reel here of flying logos and some great award winning visuals produced by his company.:

furthermore, Jed's son Christian has won awards for his type design and already has a wikipedia page:
