I arrived at the solution after struggling to find an organic quality, something that looked like it had a life apart from any that the author might be allowing it.
Vines are sprouting up around Bacchus while he sleeps on a Greek Island. The paint dried very off-white. The pure white on top of it was added later when I cleaned up some dirty marks that had attached to the surface over time (The piece is from 1988).

Nice link to the strips commentary.
Looking at that, it occurs to me that there is no excellence in syndicated comic strips today. They seem to all suck (at least the ones that I encounter). You'd think that as the market contracted there would be some cream to float to the surface.
Didn't the Pogo folk stop doing the strip mainly because the papers kept reducing the printed size of the art?
No, they stopped doing it mainly because the creator died.

Ever tried to use nail polish? Not sure how it would do on paper, but it can be interesting on wood panel paintings.
Oh, and yesterday I was having some fun with the gender genie and tried to run a few examples of writings through it to see what that thing would say.
I used some of yours, so you can go and have a look there for the results.
I thought the Kelly folk continued Pogo for a while after his death, but canceled the strips when the format kept shrinking.
