Milt Caniff used to talk about how good the engravers at the Tribune News syndicate were and how he could count on them to get subtle colouring effects onto the printed page. This is Burma in a panel from a May 1941 Sunday page of Terry and the Pirates.

Just finshed Jenny Uglow's wonderful biography of the wood-engraver Thomas Bewick (having had it on the reading list for 3 years), so am full of enormous new-found appreciation for engravers. I can't even begin to comprehend by what practice newspapermen acheived colour effects like this. Being in publishing myself now and faced with photoshop on a daily basis, I doubt I ever will.
